Padua is one of the oldest cities in Italy. In ancient times, Padova achieved a victory over the Spartans before it was conquered by the Romans and received the town charter. In the Middle Ages, Padua was an independent city state, like many of its neighbouring cities, but was ruled by a Podesta of the emperor. 

In 1405 the city finally fell to Venice, in 1797 to Napoleon, and finally to Austria. With one of the oldest universities in the world officially founded on 1222, Padua was always an intellectual and artistic centre, wich brought many art treasures to the city and made it a hotbed of revolutionary ideas.

ABSTRACT

Photonics technologies are present in almost any field of precision measurements in on-ground laboratories. Systems based on lasers, interferometers opical fibers and spectroscopy are of common use and allow the best measurement results from the nanoscale to long distance measurements with interferometers to strain and temperature measurements with fiber sensors to gas concentration and composition with spectroscopic systems, etc. Thanks to the tremendous technological development of laser sources and optical technologies in general, now is possible to adapt these measurement system to be hosted onboard of spaceborne systems. Except from LIDAR systems which are widely used, other measurement technique are considered quite “novel” in the space community. As an example the LISA –PF mission hosts a high accuracy interferometer as well as the GRACE follow-on mission. Novel photon based instrument are expected to replace in a near future microwave distance meters, capacitive sensors, gyroscopes, accelerometers, temperature sensors etc.

Contributions are welcomed in the field of Space and Aerospace instruments based on interferometers and/or optical systems for accurate distance, strain, acceleration and attitude measurements.
