SPECIAL SESSION #4
Space-Based Solutions for Global Challenges: Telemedicine, Earth Observation, and Sustainable Development in Remote Areas
ORGANIZED BY
Antonio Pallotti
Italian Space Agency
ABSTRACT
This special session aims to explore the transformative role of space technologies in addressing global challenges, with a particular focus on applications in remote and underserved regions, such as Africa.
TOPICS
The session will gather experts to discuss innovative projects and partnerships that leverage space systems for societal and environmental benefits. Key areas of focus include:
- Telemedicine and Advanced Biomedical Monitoring: Developing and deploying telemedicine solutions enabled by satellite communication to enhance healthcare delivery in remote areas, including monitoring astronaut health during space missions.
- Earth Observation for Climate and Disaster Management: Leveraging satellite data to monitor climate change, manage natural disasters, and improve agricultural practices in regions where terrestrial infrastructure is limited.
- Capacity Building and Education in Space Technologies: Facilitating knowledge transfer and training programs in collaboration with universities, research institutions, and local governments to empower communities in adopting and benefiting from space technolgies.
- Development of Space Infrastructure and Operations in Emerging Regions: Expanding global access to space by fostering the creation of ground segments and satellite operations in underserved areas, such as Africa and Latin America, building on successful examples like the Luigi Broglio Space Centre in Malindi, Kenya.
- Public-Private Partnerships for Space Innovation: Highlighting international collaborations that enable sustainable development, including joint ventures between space agencies, industries, and academia to address pressing global issues.
This session welcomes contributions from universities, research centers, space agencies, and private sector partners to share their experiences and propose future directions. Through discussions, it seeks to create a roadmap for harnessing space-based solutions to improve quality of life, foster sustainability, and promote innovation on a global scale.
