ABSTRACT
TAS provides assets for military and commercial applications where given performances are requested with an high availability of service for lifetimes well above the duration of the satellites. “Space Logistic Support” for TAS means failures management, satellite substitution and all kind of services in space that allow to provide a continuous availability of the requested services. We can distinguish three different kind of possible Logistic approaches:
- - Telecom Geostationary (ie. SICRAL): replacement of Geostationary telecom satellites in case of failures/completion of on board expendable resources.
- - Constellation (ie. COSMO): satellite replacement in case of failure in order to maintain the constellation operative functions, graceful degradations may be accepted and constellation optimization can be introduced to manage transients. Dormient Satellites.
- - Future Concepts (SpaceTUG): “Services in Space” represents the new frontier in space logistics. As satellite servicing we refer to in orbit assembly, on-orbit rescue, refueling, repositioning, repair or inspection of satellites, upgrading obsolete hardware, and capability applicability to exploration missions such as the asteroid retrieval mission; can include mitigation and debries removal and other maintenance services can be provided by suitable drones in order to realise a real logistic approach with parts replacements and minimization of Life Cycle Costs ( i.e. Launch costs). Commercial applications include life extension/refueling, repositioning, and repairing satellites. Satellite repair includes:
- Freeing jammed deployables (e.g., solar arrays and antennas)
- Moving out-of-place thermal blankets and cables or cutting objects or cables restricting deployment
